Australia is filled with stories that refuse to be neatly explained.
There are strange lights seen on lonely outback roads, ships believed to be buried beneath shifting sand, creatures said to inhabit dark waterways and legends passed from one generation to the next.
Australian Mysteries & Legends explores these unexplained events, curious histories, unusual encounters and enduring stories from across the country.
Our articles examine subjects including:
- Unexplained phenomena
- Historical mysteries
- Australian folklore and legends
- Mysterious creatures
- Lost treasures and disputed discoveries
- Ghost stories and unusual encounters
Exploring the Story and the Evidence
Some mysteries have reasonable scientific explanations. Others are based on incomplete historical records, conflicting eyewitness accounts or stories that have changed through years of retelling.
We aim to clearly distinguish between documented facts, accepted history, personal accounts, theories and folklore. Our purpose is not to prove that every legend is true, but to explore how the story began, examine the available evidence and consider why it continues to fascinate people.
Sometimes the explanation is almost as interesting as the mystery itself.
Respecting First Nations Stories
Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have diverse cultures, languages and storytelling traditions.
Where an article discusses First Nations knowledge or stories, we aim to identify the relevant community or Country whenever reliable information is available. We do not assume that one version represents every Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community.
Some cultural knowledge is private, sacred or not appropriate for wider publication. We aim to approach these subjects respectfully and rely on publicly available, reputable sources.
Our Approach
We research articles using reliable sources wherever possible, including museums, libraries, historical societies, government records, academic research and reputable news archives.
However, mysteries and legends often involve uncertain or disputed information. New evidence may emerge, and interpretations can change.
If you notice a factual error or have reliable information that could improve an article, please contact us. Corrections and thoughtful contributions are always welcome.
